2013 Kentucky State Silhouette Championship
A record turn-out for our little range, we had 38 competitors, representing states from Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin (whew, I sure hope I didn’t leave anyone out!). We sincerely appreciate all you guys and gals taking the time to come visit with us!
Saturday was the warmest of the two days, and newcomers to our range got their first taste of the tricky wind and mirage conditions (that I’m still trying to figure out after 7 years…). The low angle of the sun on clear days this time of year really makes things tough in the afternoon, for both iron and scope shooters. We really had no clear-cut leaders in either division after the scores were posted, setting the stage for a real dog-fight on Sunday.
After Saturday’s match, those who still had any stamina left participated in the time-honored Kentucky sport of Chicken Bowling. Without going into too much detail, it’s a hoot if you haven’t tried it, and a good fund raiser for our target setters. Saturday’s event was won by Marshall Chase, of the Michigan contingent.
Sunday was a few degrees cooler, and overcast much of the day. The winds were light and very twitchy, and more than once up and down the line, I heard wailing and teeth gnashing as a shooter got caught in a switch. The overcast helped, especially in the afternoon, with good visibility being the order of the day.
As the afternoon ran down, and more and more scores were posted, it became apparent the race for first in both divisions was going to be a tight one…and both iron sights and scopes came down to the last target on the last bank of animals! It was a real nail-biter, but shooting partners Mike Patterson (iron sights) and Richard Wood (scope) came away with one-point wins in their divisions. Congratulations to this years State Champs!
The top three finishers and their two-day totals in each division were:
- Mike Patterson (54)
- Glenn Fewless (53)
- Russell Rorrer (53)
- Richard Wood (57)
- Greg Pennell (56)
- Mark Finney (52)
Good shooting, and congratulations! The rest of the class winners and all the scores are here on the “Wailing Wall”
There was good shooting, good competition, great fellowship and sportsmanship all weekend…thanks to the greatest bunch of competitors you could ever ask to shoot with/against! As usual, with shooters being shooters, there was bound to be some shenanigans . . . We had our first-ever Chicken Lynching…as a nameless perpetrator managed to steal Marshall Chase’s mascot, and hang ‘em high!
C’mon, Marshall, it really wasn’t about the chicken bowling…really…
Well, friends, that about wraps up this year’s shooting. But before I go, I’d like to give a special “shout-out” to our faithful range crew, Bob Frame, Ron Musser, Jim Lang, Greg Payne, and the others who did so much work to have the range in such great shape for the weekend…Thanks Guys! Hope to see everyone back next season!
